A ferocious kind of thanks

This time of year always gets to me.

Not because of the holiday itself, or the recipes, or the travel, or the forced cheer.

No, Thanksgiving hits me because it demands something that most of us spend our days avoiding…

Presence. The kind that drags you closer to the bone of your own life.

At this point in my journey, I’ve lived through every possible Thanksgiving a woman can have.

The ones where my home was full.
The ones where my heart was empty.
The ones where I fed strangers at soup kitchens and cried through dessert.
The ones where I felt so rich with love and possibility I could barely swallow.

Sometimes our plates overflow. Sometimes they’re insultingly bare. But the spiritual assignment never changes: Give thanks anyway. Find thanks anyway. Choose thanks anyway.

Even if it’s microscopic, or ragged, or it feels like you’re trying to light a candle in a hurricane.

Because here’s what’s true: Real gratitude isn’t reserved for when life is shiny and cooperative. It’s gritty and it’s raw – a feral prayer whispered through clenched teeth.

It’s a woman saying: “I’m here. I’m alive. I’m paying attention. And I refuse to forget the miracle of that.”

Every year around this time, I feel myself slipping into what I call the Thanksgiving trance.

The gratitude lens slides over my eyes, and the world – in all its mess, madness, and magnificence – sharpens.

Suddenly, I am grateful for the strangely familiar strangers on the subway.

For the people who know things I will never understand – the ones who keep boilers lit, electricity flowing, garbage and recycling moving through the city.

I’m grateful for every woman who has ever sat in a circle with me, trembling with truth.

Grateful for the incandescent sisterhood that threads us all across time and distance.

And I am especially grateful for the kind of gratitude that only reveals itself when everything is falling apart.

Because the secret architecture of this holiday is this: Rupture and rapture are sisters.

One cracks you open. The other fills you back in. And we don’t get to choose which arrives first.

So this year, whether you are floating in abundance or scraping the bottom of the bowl…

Whether you are celebrating in community or navigating a fault line in your heart…

Whether your life feels like a feast or a fast…

I want you to claim your gratitude with your whole body. And tell me:

What are you grateful for because it broke you?
What are you grateful for because it saved you?
What are you grateful for because it surprised you, seduced you, devastated you, demanded you rise?

Gratitude is not a passive act…especially in this culture, at this time.

It is revolution. It is reclamation.

It is you, me, we, us, standing in the middle of our lives – beautiful, imperfect, unguarded – and yelling: “Yes, even this. And especially this.”

Let this be our feast. Our altar. Our communal exhale before the world rushes on.

With so much love and pleasure,
