Turn yourself on, on purpose (pleasure is not a reward you earn)

Sisters,

Years ago, I was handed an assignment that sounded slightly absurd and more than slightly terrifying: prepare my home as if the most important person in the world were coming to visit.

Clean it. Fill it with beauty. Choose the food, the candles, the music. And then realize that the guest was me. That all of it was for me.

So I did. I cleaned as if someone I adored were on her way.

I went to the market and gathered roses, dark chocolate, bread, cheese, strawberries, and felt, on the walk home, a low electrical current moving under my skin as men noticed me. I put on Sade, because of course I did, and sank into a long, luxurious bath with my little treasures arranged nearby like a private altar.

And time stopped rushing me. It softened. It listened. That old, unmistakable feeling rose up through me, liquid gold, melted honey, a surrender so complete it startled me. When I stepped out and looked at myself by candlelight, without criticism, without correction, I was undone. I saw beauty where I had never thought to look.

Nobody did that to me. I did it. On purpose. For myself.

Here is what that night taught me, and what I will tell you now, my love.

Most of us are waiting to be turned on. Waiting for the right partner, the right mood, the right vacation, the right glass of wine, the right anything. We treat our turn-on like weather, something that happens to us when the conditions line up, and something we are powerless to summon when they do not.

And we treat pleasure like a reward. The little treat you earn once the laundry is folded and the emails are answered and everyone else has been taken care of. Pleasure as the dessert at the end of a long day of being good.

Both are lies. And they are expensive ones.

Your turn-on is not an accident. It is a skill.

I said this out loud sitting across from my dear friend Layla Martin on her podcast, This Tantric Life, recently, because it is the truest thing I know: you can learn to turn yourself on, on purpose, anytime you choose. In line at the bank. In a meeting that will not end. In your own kitchen on a Wednesday. In a bath on an ordinary afternoon. Turn-on is not luck and it is not weather. It is a practice you can build, and the woman who can do it does not wait around for permission to feel alive.

And pleasure? She is not a reward you earn for good behavior.

She is not a treat. She is not a little self-care indulgence you allow yourself once you have been productive enough to deserve it. Pleasure is power. She is an orientation, a deliberate decision to point your attention and your body toward aliveness instead of toward numbness. She is survival technology, dressed up like a luxury so we would not notice how essential she is.

Here is what changes when you stop waiting and start practicing.

A woman who can turn herself on, on purpose, who treats her pleasure as power instead of a permission slip, moves through the world differently. She tolerates less. She expects more. The stakes of her own life become visible to her, and she begins to respond accordingly. She stops waiting for someone to hand her a good life and starts generating one from the inside out.

That is not indulgence, sister. That is the most practical thing a woman can do.

With so much love and pleasure,
